IMPORTANT - Fizz Cup Update - April 30th

Postby Bea Woodget » Thu Apr 30, 2009 2:38 am

1°) Committee
===========
We are quite ready now: course charts, schedule, rules, sw tools for scoring, documentation ... are available.

The NOTICE of RACE may be downloaded here (pdf file):
http://bea.woodget.free.fr/LesGLENANS/FizzCup2009/Notice_of_Race-2009FizzCup.pdf

2°) Competitors
============
All registered sailors have been requested to answer few questions in a "competitor record" form.
This is mainly used by us in order to prepare in advance the entries at each event: time slot, groups... This is an headache to manage, but sailors react in a very good way: already 30% of them have completed the survey since it has be posted (within 8 hours).
The form/survey is available here:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=ci04NFlQUXZPV2Z5TGdkdWMyUXJkNVE6MA..

3°) Yacht Clubs
===========
All of them look very interested and motivated by this Cup and expressed their wishes to help.
All wanted to host an event, so we did our best to satisfy all of them. They also had to send us an "Act of Candidature" (http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=cDZKd3k3NTliSldPNW1Sekp0cGI0SVE6MA..) including commitments on available courses and staff...
16 or more new courses have been designed.
Today, we need tangible commitments regarding Race Committee staff. The Yacht Clubs involvement is the key for a successful Fizz Cup 2009, as the Yacht Clubs manage the overall event. Because of the size of the event, it will be impossible to ask a small number of volunteers to be available for 9 hours or more during 3 different time slots each weekend, from May till June...
For this purpose, concerned Yacht Clubs have been requested to enter some names in a planning. It is available here:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=raIBJ8vVgKYoBeuuDETiCMA
This is essential for the Cup to arrive safe and sound (and happen).

Fizz Cup Committee Public Announcement

Postby Bea Woodget » Thu Apr 30, 2009 2:36 pm

Competitors !

Please take a minute or two to fill out the Fizz Cup competitor survey which you can find HERE

http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=ci04NFlQUXZPV2Z5TGdkdWMyUXJkNVE6MA..

Many of you already have done so, but we need more.. of you .

It is essential for our planning
-- including YC needs to book time slots for their staff and asking for volunteers! --
that we know the time zone preferences of as many of you as possible.

* So please, take the time to fill out the form so that we can ask Yacht Clubs to get ready and our volunteers to show up at the right times!

Thank you. :D

After the opening comments, there will be a short fun group contest.

At 10:30, we will teleport to Santa Rosa Sim to race Fizz's on a slalom course in teams. Instructions are at the bottom of this post. Thanks to Julia Ceres for planning this and being the Race Director!

Observation Platforms for the Fizz Slalom races are in Santa Barbara and in Blake Sea Pacific.

Come and dance and celebrate with us.

Slalom Notes:

This is a FUN event for the opening ceremony of the fizz cup 2009
Hosted by Starboards Yacht Club in the Santa Rosa sim

Boat used will be a Fizz 3.04 in Novice mode

There are 2 starting docks, numbered 1 & 2
ALL boats using dock 1 MUST have id 001
ALL boats using dock 2 MUST have id 002
This is required to open the gate for the next team member, so ALL team boats use the same id.
The left dock is 1 and the right dock is 2 and can be checked on the disc at the back of each dock.

Team members will assemble on the dock assigned to them by the Race Director

The first team member to race will rez his/her boat in the dock and wait for the start. You will see the red and white gate at the front of the dock drop releasing you.

After the the first boat has started the 2nd team member will now rez his/her boat in the dock - the gate will remain open for 1 minute (60 seconds) be sure to be in the dock and not partly over the entrance.

When the boat on the course completes the course, by bumping the disc on the back of the dock the gate opens releasing the next boat.

This is repeated until all team members have completed their laps, the winner will be the first team to have their last boat bump their disc.

Each team will run laps on both courses and total time over both will determine overall winner. REMEMBER to change boat id when changing lanes.

Start command = /150 Start
this will drop the gate to start the race.

Important: some changes occured in the shedule (time slot)

Postby Bea Woodget » Mon May 04, 2009 11:19 am

Sorry for that, but taking in account:
    - results to our competitor survey
    - feedback from YC and volunteers on available staff
    - the fact we want to balance the load to give all racers the best chances
    - ...

We had to change some time slots.

As we run a competitor survey before the first 3 events (events 4, 5 and 6 are the same), it could happen we update this schedule again.

Sorry for that, we also are on a learning curve :)

Competitors are invited to check again the survey:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=ci04NFlQUXZPV2Z5TGdkdWMyUXJkNVE6MA..

Yacht Clubs and volunteers are invited to check again the planning for staff spreadsheet:

Competitors survey - Analysis

Postby Bea Woodget » Wed May 06, 2009 12:05 am

The aim of this survey was to ease the "load balancing" of the fleet in the different time slots and groups,
    - to be able to give racers a more precise planning,
    - to ease the commitment of Yacht Clubs and volunteers staff (Race committee)
As soon as we got a sufficient number of answers, we adapted our schedule, to offer the best chances to most of the sailors.

Unfortunatly, 2 days before the first event, only half of the competitors have answered.

The status is the following:
    - Entries (registered): 75
    - Withdraw: 13
    - no UUID found: 2
    - Remaining: 60
    - Answered to the survey: 30
The main given reason to withdraw, is: "I don't think my skills with the Fizz are up to the level necessary to be competitive" (more than half). :?
The top 3 represented countries (30 answers) :
    - Japan (11 competitors)
    - Germany (7 competitors)
    - USA (4 competitors)
Others come from Europe (7), Australia (1).

Even if we are a bit disapointed with the reason to withdraw and the lack of involvement from sailors out of regard for the staff of volunteers, we continue to do our best to arrange things in the best possible way...
Anyway, the following statements are confirmed:
- The maximum number of competitors per group is six.
- Competitors are not required to enter each of the six Qualifying events, but all six events will be entered into the overall rankings.
- If a sufficient number of competitors miss one or more Qualifying Series events, the Fizz Cup Committee may hold an additional Qualifying Series event.
In addition:
- Priority will be given to sailors having filled in the survey

Sailors can still fill in the survey here:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=ci04NFlQUXZPV2Z5TGdkdWMyUXJkNVE6MA..

Amendment to Sailing Instructions

Postby Bea Woodget » Fri May 08, 2009 1:07 am

Q: Can you ammend the SI for the Fizz Cup so that the rule for OCS (early starters) is defined.

A: For the Fizz Cup, during the qualifying series, the "over early" text call of the line is the gold standard for racing, regardless the start time given by the line, its colors, or the timer. If the line reports you over early at the time you cross the line then you are over early regardless of the time recorded by the line. And if you are given a start time of -00:00:01 but are not called over early then you have started legally. ... If a sailor is called "Over early" by the line, he must return to re-cross the line by ROUNDING the ends (buoy) and restart. ("ducking" the line to get a valid start time is not allowed and will not be considered as a valid start until the sailor rounds the ends and restarts).

That said, few comments:

- This "issue" exists since the first SLSF line has been created by Kanker Greenacre in 2006... and has been discussed in many posts on .ORG.
- It reappears at each "official" event... Some examples:
- you may cross the line at 00:00, with the line calling you "Over Early" and recording your start time.
- The line may occasionally record -00:01 as a valid start.
- The line may even shouts "over early" with a recorded start time of +00:01.

I don't even want to know what is the problem....bugs, lag,... it is not my business. We do with what we have, and the above statement is clear enough I think, but, I can't understand why this issue has not been solved yet by the line manufacturers...and I can't understand why we can find so many versions/releases of the startline: in the 7 events of the qualifying series of the Fizz Cup, we will use 4 differents startlines... Could the YC agree on a standard version please? Could the developpers check their code before adding new features?

Tips for sailors: TRUST the inboard countdown timer of your Fizz, and forget the line timer...

FYI, the Fizz Cup Committee is thinking about introducing a new start procedure for the final series (based on RL flag system, forgetting about line timer and line colors...)

Startline Issues

Postby Hay Ah » Fri May 08, 2009 8:28 pm

All of the above issues are solved in my new startline wich is available after this weekend as the line goes official.
Since my startline is in development, i found the issue of the cross early bug, when one is on the line when the timer goes to zero, it still registers the sailor.
My line doesnt do that anymore since the early beta versions !
Bea, you could have known this, if you just tested this yourself, before commenting on developers of startlines who in your opinion add new features first before solving problems.
All in all it was not hard to code, i just used a new list for anyone who crossed the line early ( the early list)
When you are on the early list, you can not cross the line 10 seconds from the moment you crossed it early.
So when you cross the line at -00:01 and get an early warning , you cant get registred 10 seconds from that time :)
It solves that issue....

Last weekend i also solved the inbound timer and line timer lag issue !
My line timer adjusts itself to the amount of lag there is in a sim, especially when there are 10 or more sailors present.
That means that the line timer always shows the actual inbound time :D
In very worst cases of lag, you sometimes see the line timer adjusts itself and jump 3 seconds before returning to normal countdown, but it always returns to the actual inbound time....

It took me weeks to figure this out and was very hard to code, but eventually the solution was very simple.
I wish i had the time to make it available for sale before the fizz cup started, but i just finished the line last tuesday and it needed some further testing...
Until now the line works perfectly and no reports are coming in for any inconsistancies.

So basicly that means that all the startlines in the sailor cove sims are cleared of these issues.
Eventually after this weekend, the line will be ready for sale ;)

Kind regards Hay Ah

Startline...

Postby Bea Woodget » Sat May 09, 2009 12:14 am

I am very happy with that Hay.

I apologize if some of my words hurted you, It was not my intention at all, and there was no particular target, only to answer a question from a competitor regarding "ducking and restart".
As you say, I could know your line solves eveything, but I must say that with all the work in background needed for the cup, I had no time to test all of the 4 lines, and each beta version of them, including the one you have finished last WE, then the new beta version which came last tuesday for further testing. I can't check everyday which beta version has been instaled here or there. Sorry for that...

Please consider my post as a general comment on this subject, after about 2 years of experience in SL Sailing, I am very happy to learn about a new line solving most (or all) of the issues.

I can confirm the line at Plum Gut worked fine for the Cup event.

At least this post will help the community to know about a new line. Once the line is released for sale, you should add a post in the Shameless Commerce Division thread at http://slsailing.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=31
