Cough.
Is this microphone on?

Ummm... ok
I'd like to announce a Regatta
A Regatta that will start this December...
a multi-week, multi-location, TRUDEAU ONE sailing event:

ONE WORLD.

This is just an early notice to hold the space, though...
Please go sail the upcoming Fizz Cup 2010 first;

when the final Fizz sailors finish
and the pennants come down,
The Trudeau ONE fleet will take Center Court.

SO...
Go sail Fizz first.

Grin.
OMG but when December comes... :-)

I'd be happy to help out with things little, small and not-so-small to make this event happen. :)

Yaaay - FANTASTIC.

Umm when exactly? Must confess Im not into Fizz (unless its in a glass LOL) so not sure when that ends.

Crewed or single handed?

Just hoping that not all the events are on weekends like the J classic....

And of course - anything I can do to help.

....

(only slightly off topic ... does anyone know if JT is planning any sort of update for the boat? Ive been keeping a "little list" of things that would make it closer to perfection. Im guessing others have their lists - should we put our heads together and then see if JT can come out with an update before the regatta?)

Announcing ONE WORLD REGATTA starting JANUARY 2011

Image

OK :-) Time to Wake-UP!

After discussion with many sailors,
since Fizzs Cup ends in early December
and many will be away for end-of year holidays,
it makes sense to delay the start of ONE WORLD to January 2011.

That delay leaves us two full months for planning, so the regatta can evolve as an SL-Wide,
community event with everyone's input that hopefully won't interfere with Fizz Cup or other RL events.

So? What's ONE WORLD?
GRIN
ONE WORLD will be a multi-week, crewed racing event.
Teams of sailors will compete against each other, sailing Trudeau ONE boats in a fun celebration of the SL Sailing Community.

Several sailors here will recall the 2010 J-CLASSIC Regatta that concluded this time last year.
Many sailors, estate owners, newbies, and even Lindens got involved to support that event.
Fifteen teams composed of ten dozen sailors participated,
racing across 800 sims during ten weeks of rather heroic races,
sponsored by more than fourteen different sailing groups.
It was a remarkable contest: The distances and conditions for each event
were harder than anything sailed in SL history up to that time.

I have no interest in doing a more difficult or more challenging event this time.
Sailors from across the grid last year showed they were more wondrous than I ever imagined.
I realized once more the focus here is community, sailors working together.
Corny Shields was right; one-design competition is not a shoot-out or deathmatch;
It's fundamentally a celebration of the wonderful people and great experience we all share.

ONE WORLD will follow that mold. It will celebrate the sailors and the history of interclub regattas,
focusing on teams and cooperation. It's a fitting legacy to Cornelius Shields,
the One-Design World race circuit, and
all the sailor whose friendship keep this fragile world we live on intact
(so far, at least).

You Got Questions?
Now elMegro's done with his regatta and Fizz 2010 is underway...
you know me.
Time for a blizzard of posts with all the details :-).
Post your ideas and make this your event too.

COME SAIL ONE WORLD!

Just off the top of my head, how about one event with requirement that Tiller=1?

Good grief! :-)
I think maybe we leave the 'tiller settings' to the skipper's discretion!

As far as courses go, I prefer longer courses using natural formations for marks.

Obviously, we can't do courses as long as the J-Class ones since the One is slower, but I don't think 30 min courses are really out of the question. We could fit in two heats per (roughly) 1-hour event.

The reason why I prefer longer courses is that it gives more opportunity for the impact of crewing to show up in the results.

YES - YES - YES
:-)
There are maybe three strong issues related to your comments; let me raise the first:
You want two races per regatta event, or just one? I originally was thinking match races... then thought maybe three short fleet races per timeslot each week...
The trouble is the amount of time.
I don't want this multiweek regatta to balloon out so much it becomes traumatic for the sailors. 60-90 min MAX per timeslot,
efficiently done, seems more than enough if we have three timeslots again and eight qualifying rounds.

The races need to be long enough to accommodate crashes, and reinforce the 'team/crew' idea.
At the same time, the courses should be laid out to use T-ONE tactics and shadow... you think?

Your suggestion of two fleet races/ timeslot could be a good compromise for these issues. :-)
Let's see what others think!

PS: Pardon me if I post some random J-Classic images in this thread to get people in the mood...
Here's last year's intrepid Narwhal first place winners on wings of victory;
Chaos, Nomad, and Glorf!

Damn, I love this place! I was trying to slip that by :-)
Winslow Homer painted long before Long Island and Norway got together to create IOD...
but wow, Homer's images captured the spirit of sailing for all time.
:-)

Orca, Naeve, Liv, Everyone?
How about Full Rules?
We have eight weeks to list any/all exceptions, and can incorporate last year's 'crash' and 'man overboard' rulesets.
Any thoughts?
