You observed it

I was penalized for oversleeping the change of wind direction. Since I found myself in the middle of a high / or low pressure area that was a pretty bad thing: not watching the direction change with a boat set on fixed wind angle

Well... wind and rank surprises are not rare in long courses, different wind options, islands etc. Except at marks, it s hard to tell who is ahead.

But i want to state here that when I gave up North (damn!!! ) WindyB kept her opinion and, together with Alain and Cynthia, are disappearing in the horizon whilke we re stuck in this f*cking walll.

Aislin and Chad are also bravely strugling and I would go pretty N for the next hours if I was them...

Agreeing with Liv, brainaid and K3 chosing N, as well as mac, 3 boats skippered by the same friends (maybe helped by software) is very significant.

Also, almost not one of those who went South made it up at DD... At most, some are barely escaping it.

For my own race, I thought I could go 'just a little' South, around the calm at North, then get back... I ve "almost" done that. Grrr....

Lottery or not, for me its well proved that North was the way.

So... congrats WindyB! Alain and Cinthya too. Aislin and Chad good luck.

Set 1 is gone... lets head for sets 2 and 3... Race is not over yet heheheh

What did it for me was noticing that afer a 1300 nm detour, you wind up with the wind in your face as a reward for your trouble. And also that is one huge long weather pattern in the worse place.
I agree with Mark and Liv that it aint over by a long shot but when I was stratagising at the race, I basically decided to bet I could get through that corner in less time than the long way round.

I've been actually having a fun time looking at how the weather pattern has broken up the northern part of the fleet based on how convex he wind pattern was (so boats far north were pushed north and boats mid north were pushed southerly)

As for ranking, an hour after the staritng gun I was #910 out of 912 boats (did no-one else go west at the start?), as I write this I'm running about #70, I'm expecting to finish closer to 910 than I am to 70 at the end of this puppy

Yes, this leg may not give much of a reliable ranking before Mauritius, or even before the finishline in Cochin itself.

If you look at the group closer to the lay line, you see it split up in 2, which is thanks to a drop in wind speed. It does strike me though that some experienced SOL users (Brainaid won leg 1 and if you look through the site, you notice he wins a LOT) chose for this option..

I think that's a bit too much honour for these plots: places like Busy Ben have been around for a while and they mostly represent a way for people who make items to showcase them.

The wolf in sheeps clothing might be me, with my use for this land, as I have no nautical goods of my own to sell.
